Thanks for IcePup!

IcePup is fantastic!  I watched the debates (American-US) on CNN using IcePup and It

worked flawlessly. Thanks for sharing it.

Boot Problem

Thanks for your replies(J-bob,Puppyluvr).  I tried what you suggested but unfortunately it didn't work.  Just for clarification, I don't have any Puppy files saved on my hard drive because I have never been able to finish booting a Puppy on this particular machine. The machine is an old PowerEdge server with a quirky cdrom(but it boots other distros just fine).  I guess I am trying to figure out what it is that is specific to Puppy that is causing this problem.  If you can think of any other things I can try please let me know.  Thanks again.

this certainly is turning into a conundrum

hmm...

this is starting to look like a tough problem after all. but there is something i do wonder about.

which versions of puppy have you tried on it. it might be the modernkernel not working well with your machine. as the modern kernel refuses to work on one of my laptops.

i would reccomend testing out Puppy 4.0, 3.01, 2.17.1, 2.16, 2.10 (If you can find it), and 1.0.8 of puppy linux. this will require about 6 cd's but it would be useful if you want to figure out what the problem might be.

but i did hear of a version of puppy called retro pup

the link is below

hope this will help you out

Job control...

Hey Buddadog,

Try "acpi=off pfix=irqpoll" @ the boot CLI....

The "irqpoll" part should do it...

i agree with puppyluvr

what puppyluvr said sounds like it should work, or at least give you more details. if you do have puppy 4.11's sfs then i would suggest following his directions.

also, i tried puppy 4.1 on a Thinkpad 600X, and it does not like to finish booting, but i think puppy 4 worked.

i'll try that for it as well.

Puppy Won't Finish Booting

This is what happens:

Loading kernel drivers needed to access disk drives...done

Searching for Puppy files in computer disk drives...pup_411.sfs not found.  Dropping out to initial-ramdisk console...

/bin/sh:  can't access tty;  job control turned off

I don't have any other Puppy files saved on my hard drive.  The cd's are fine(I have tried many different Puplets old and new but still get the same result, different file name).  They all work on my other computer.  Ubuntu will boot up, most Slackware based distros will boot up...it must be something in the way puppy is looking for information on my cd drive perhaps?  If anyone can help me out with this I would certainly appreciate it.  Thanks.

I think i know what's wrong

I have experienced the same problem on one of the testing ISOs of BobPup LightConnections.

it involves the initrd.gz, and the sfs file.

My guess is that you have a puppy 4.1.1 initrd.gz and an earlier sfs.

the eaasiest fix is to rename the sfs "pup411.sfs", but you can add the text after it.

If that does not work, then try Puppy 4.1.1, and if that does not boot, then it might be your machine, as one of my laptops cannot boot later than 4.00, and i primarily use 2.16 or 1.0.8 on it.

i hope for you to have the best of luck,

Pup_411.sfs not found

I can't get Puppy(or any of the Puplets) to boot up.  I am using an old PowerEdge 2300 server.  1.5 GIG RAM, 700mhz.  It has Fedora Core 5 installed.  Here is the error:

Pup_411.sfs not found.  Dropping out to initial-ramdisk console.../bin/sh:  can't access tty; jobcontrol turned off.

Anyone have any ideas?  It seems any slackware based distro will run on it.  I have had success with Wolvix, NimbleX, and Pardus (not Slackware based).

Thanks.

Looks like A Puppy 4.1.1 related problem

I personally think that your system may be setup with the initrd.gz from puppy 4.1.1 (if they are using it yet) so i would recommend checking with that, and clearing your hard drive partition containing puppy might be good, and check you boot parameters.

if you have any more info about the culprit let me know through either a reply, or my personal contact form.
