DingoPlus

DingoPlus is a straight-forward remaster of Dingo customised for the Asus Eeepc!

DingoPlus includes plenty of extra packages as well as all of the required Eeepc drivers. The wireless works straight out of the box, although you will have to load the Atl2 module if you want to use the wired ethernet. The brightness and wireless function keys work, but the volume and mute functions keys don't, but you can control the volume using the icon on the taskbar and I have installed xbindkeys if you want to set them up. Significant additions include Open Office, Remote Desktop Client and Python/PyGtk programming facilities. For a full list of packages see the list below. I have not changed the look of Dingo as I think it looks great already and I do not want to take credit away from the original developers by rebranding it. It contains all of the applications I need at work and home, it will run in the RAM comfortably on any computer with 512Mb RAM and it will boot from USB flash drives, SD cards and hard drives.

It has to be downloaded as a ZIP file as the file server I am using does not allow the transfer of .iso images. Inside the ZIP file you will find the .iso image, the md5sum, a package list and a screenshot. The md5sum is for the .iso image not the ZIP file! I do not have any way of tracking how many times DingoPlus is downloaded as yet - so I would appreciate it is you could send an e-mail to tony.sales@rncb.ac.uk with the word 'dingoplus' as the subject along with any positive and/or negative feedback if you download it.

Update:

Wesnoth Special Edition*

Iso: http://www.rnc.ac.uk/mct/linux/dingoplus/dingoplus-wesnoth.zip (321mb)

md5sum: 04a3c2eeaf465c7f327bff067cd3767f dingoplus-wesnoth.iso

I have just uploaded a special edition of DingoPlus featuring the
Battle of Wesnoth turn based strategy game. This has exactly the same
applications as the original DingoPlus with the addition of SDL and The
Battle of Wesnoth. I have modified the Battle of Wesnoth so that it
starts in windowed mode because it cannot handle the 800x480 resolution
on the Asus Eeepc. However you can navigate the start screens by
enlarging it to 1024x768 by pressing alt and left mouse in the bottom
left corner, dragging it to the top right corner and dragging the
corner of the window.

Once you have started the game you can then maximise the window again
and navigate by using the cursor keys to scroll around the map and
hotkeys to play the game, and you can use Ctrl+Z/X to zoom in and out
if you want.

Extra Packages Included:

Puppy 3 packages: (http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/puppylinux/)

Wolf Pup Linux 2.00

Wolf Pup Linux Live CD 2.00 will revolve around Wolf Bone, The
core ISO of Wolf Pup. Wolf Bone's main purpose is to boot up linux with
a windows manager, configure the hardware, connect to the Internet and
install PET/PUP packages localy or remotely. Anything else that Wolf
Pup will be able to do will depend on the packages the end-user decides
to install.

Cloudy Skies Live

Cloudy Skies Live
astronomy CD uses the entire Puppy 3.01 Linux as it's core and consists of over 2 dozen programs. In addition to these, there are also 4 JAVA applications and several smaller JAVA applets in 6 categories. Almost all of the astronomy software can be run just by a single click on its associated desktop icon. Documentation for each program is just two mouse clicks away from the desktop, accessed by clicking on the "START HERE" icon.

Compiz-Fusion wizard by Tombh was added to provide 3d accelerated graphics for the following video cards: nVidia (from GeForce2 onwards), ATI (from Radeon 7000 onwards), Intel (from i810 onwards) and Possibly newer SIS cards (but untested so far). The following programs require the use of these drivers for best performance: Celestia, coords, OpenUniverse, Planets3d, Skydome and Stellarium. A 3d graphics card is NOT a requirement to run these 6 programs but the frame rates might be very low. Wine has been installed to run three of the included Windows applications (Iris, Registax and Jupiter2). If you live in the USA, you may find the spreadsheet file "Zipcode 2 longitude" helpful since it includes over 33,000 zipcodes and gives the latitude and longitude for each, in both decimal degrees and degree, minutes and seconds.

There are hundreds and hundreds of thousands of stars included in the installed star catalogs for the seven planetarium programs. Integrated into the "Sky Charts" planetarium program are over 9,800 images (pictures) of the deep sky. All of this and much much more is included on Cloudy Skies Live and NO internet connection is required to use this software.

Humble system requirements:
Minimum usable would be about a PII 333Mhz with 256 MB ram and NO hard drive. For better results a 650 MHz (or higher) processer and a 3d graphics card is suggested.
If you have 900 MB of ram or more, the CD will load entirely into ram, freeing the CD drive for other uses and allowing programs to start much faster.

A special note to astronomy club members:
Cloudy Skies Live is very easy to customize for your clubs planetarium or meeting location. You can easily change the geographic locations in the program/s you wish (You could even change the background or add your clubs newsletter if you desired.)and then save those changes back to the CD! You could then make copies of it for all your astronomy club members.

Breeezy

An education-oriented build of Puppy Linux that is ready for the eeePC as well as for kiosk PCs. Breeezy is built to be a small browser of HTML pages, office documents and multimedia. Originally built as Safepup for browsing in Win-PCs without touching NTFS, it was ported to the eeePC in December 2007 using a flash-install procedure. There is also a remastering guide for the ISO. (This puplet can be deployed as network-booted Puppy using TFTP server and PXE booting).

Quotes from users:

"... that [is] stellar wifi setup that you have in there... also that most of the pages in the firefox browser fit nicely with out much scrolling side to side. Also I can play some online games that I couldn't play with the Xandros. The streaming video is very good, better than my Dell desktop. No breakups or hesitancy." - Lilahblossom

"I didn't fully appreciate breeezy until I started looking at other puppy and non-puppy distros and trying to get the network drivers installed and things like the Flash plug-in and divx playback support enabled. This is a *great* distro for Linux newbs like myself." - gadgetguyinva

"I was on my wpa network in about 5 minutes [of fresh installation]. This is a good alternative when I am on public hotspots." - ID

Hurt Me Plenty 01

Doomsday + many addons and wads (extralevels, Doom1 shareware, freedom (doom2-clone) and more)

Quake2 shareware + many addons, engines + wads

Descent 2 shareware

Tuxracer

Dreamchess 2000

Some Flashgames

So it is a pure Game-Puppy.

No printing (cups removed), no office (abiword, gnumeric removed)

But you can go online, netsurf and seamonkey are included.

You also have wine, as it is needed for a helpfull tool to examine new Quake2 wads.

You will need a 700 or 800 MB CDR, I did not burn it myself, just ran it frugal.

NOP 4.0 [revision 1]

NOP 4.0 is based on Puppy Linux 4.0 Dingo and uses the Xfce 4.4.2 desktop manager.

Abiword word processor and Gnumeric spreadsheet have been removed, as well as games and other non-essential applications. The idea is that you install to a flash drive (or frugal install on hard disc drive) and then add the OpenOffice sfs package (or a goffice sfs pack to restore Abiword, etc). Hotpup has been modified so as to work with Xfce.

Differences to Puppy Linux 4.0:

Xfce 4.4.2 replaces JWM

Thunar replaces Rox file manager (also includes video thumbnailers and audio metatagger)

Opera replaces Seamonkey web browser (Opera also functions as good e-mail and BitTorrent clients)

xfburn replaces Pburn CD/DVD writer

xine-ui replaces gxine multimedia player

Orage replaces Osmo personal organizer

Gtkbasic replaces puppybasic

galculator replaces all other calculators

Now at Revision 1 [31-May-2008]:

removed gtkam

removed fotoxx

added mtpaint

added gpicviewer

Pschedule updated to v0.6

Pwireless updated to v0.8.3

Pmirror updated to v0.3

Pfilesearch updated to v1.5

Pbackup updated to v3.10

wNOP v0.2

Torrent @ Linux Tracker (thanks klu9)

If you have the original wNOP.iso then you can simply download this ISO-patch -- wNOP0.1_0.2.delta (~27MB) (md5.txt).
To use it --
* You must have xdelta.pet installed
* The delta ISO-patch must be in the same directory as the original ISO
* From within that directory type --

Code:

xdelta3 -d -s wNOP.iso wNOP0.1_0.2.delta wNOP_v0.2.iso

and the new ISO will thus be created. It can be verified with the wNOP-v0.2 md5sum at the top of this post.

Compiz-Fusion in action
This Youtube Video shows off a lot of the CF effects.

wNOP Website
I will be maintaining latest news, FAQs, screenshots and such like at tombh.co.uk

Release Information
I know I had been referring to this pending release as wNOP2, but seeing as it still hasn't achieved wNOP's primary goal of working on every card that supports Compiz-Fusion (see here for an explanation) I think the status of a whole number version should not yet be given. I hope that there is no confusion with the versionless wNOP, which *should* have been called wNOP-v0.1.

I have learnt a lot since I made wNOP, one of the most important being the graphics cards capable of running Compiz-Fusion, namely --

      nVidia - from GeForce2 onwards

ATI - from Radeon 7000 onwards

      Intel - from i810 onwards

Possibly newer SIS cards but untested so far

v0.2 has taken account of this and has removed weighty and uneeded DRI modules for unsupported cards, it also has a list of known unsupported cards. This list can, however, be overridden using the new manual option in the Compiz-Fusion Wizard at boot time.

Here are the other notable changes --

Based on NOPr2 (A nicely tweaked, well maintained and Xfce-based Puppy)

Intel cards based on i810 driver work out of the box

Fglrx driver added for newer ATI cards, but provides mostly unusable functionality

CF Wizard script now offers a simple Auto or Manual choice at first boot

Wobble Fairy Button on top panel magically fixes CF and Emerald crashes

Xfce default session edited to prevent an invisible taskbar at first boot

CCSM compiled to standalone executable, so Python is no longer needed

 	 Lil-Polar cursor added

Gxine uses the xshm driver to enable video playback in CF (still not perfect)

Default Emerald theme is bluer for active windows

Lots of little things here and there

wNOPinspect is now integrated and can be run by simply typing

Code:

wNOPinspect

into the terminal. It will place wNOPdump.tar.gz on the desktop. If you are having problems with wNOP then please post this file to the thread.

wNOP extras
Keep up to date with wow's latest goodies
Wow is really the pioneer behind Compiz-Fusion and Puppy, he led the way for getting it working and ceaselessly keeps us up to date with the latest versions. His Compiz-Fusion page is here. Here you can get the latest Compiz-Fusion and dependencies. Latest versions can be installed directly on top of existing versions - so easypeasy for wNOPers. However, you might also like to check out Screenlets and the Cairo dock.
Thankyou so much wow.

Patched Mplayer
A patched version of Mplayer is available that offers more improved and stable performance to Gxine as a video player under Compiz-Fusion. See the thread here.
