    BioPuppy Chosen for Debian-Med Project

The custom Puppy derivative BioPuppy has been chosen by the Debian-Med Project as the operating system to contain the BioInformatics packages that are one aspect of Debian-Med's current focus. Debian-Med is a custom Debian distribution that is creating "a free software-based platform for all aspects of medical research and practice."

BioPuppy OS was created by Puppy Linux community member Prakash as "an electronic workbench for bio-informatics and computational biology...containing all the required software to boot the computer with ready to use bio-informatics tools." BioPuppy is based on Puppy-3.01-seamonkey Linux.

The quality of Prakash's contribution to this project should be pretty obvious, but he also says, "The whole credit goes to Puppy Linux. Special thanks to Mr.Barry Kauler who encouraged me in this project and ... all the community members."

Chihuahua Community Edition 3.02 is Back

The latest Community Puppy has had a rough puppyhood, but it is now available as Chihuahua alpha 8 reborn 3.02.

From the Release Announcement: "Chihuahua has returned to Firefox3.01 as the default browser, with a nice new theme built-in, called Phoenity Reborn. But the main new feature here is a really cool version of Icewin, provided by Ttuuxxx. It sports new icons, a tidied-up Blinky, LED digital clock as default plus an analogue version available. Right clicking the freememapplet gives you a listing of partition information, plus a running processes manager. I haven't yet seen the small but annoying freememapplet window on the desktop. Hope it's gone for good. Four themes are provided and very nice they are too. This is well worth a look."

Get A Pet for Your Puppy - New Add-On Software - SoftPhone, Virtual Box, Open Office 3

Get Your Puppy a Pet - Exciting New Software - PSip (Puppy SoftPhone) - Virtual Box - Open Office 3 Beta 2.

The easiest way to expand Puppy's capabilities is by adding Pet packages.  They install with one click and are already tested.  Many are available by clicking the Install icon to start the Puppy Package Manager, but others are being prepared almost daily and posted in the Additional Software (Pups, n' stuff) Discussion Forum.  Here are three you might find interesting: PSip (Puppy SoftPhone) - Virtual Box - Open Office 3 Beta 2.  Please click the links below the descriptions for further information.

PSip - Puppy SIP - a Softphone for Dingo 4 that is a collective project of the Puppy Community coordinated by Official Crustacean Lobster.   This is a Beta release and everyone can help by testing it and reporting their results.  Softphones are one of the topics  that are getting a lot of attention in the Linux world, and Puppy is right there at the forefront.

    PSIP - Puppy Softphone

VirtualBox - A free Virtual Machine for both Windows and Linux, Virtual Box is now owned by Sun Microsystems.  It allows one to run both Windows and Linux programs in a virtual machine inside of Puppy, so it is a way both to check out other Linux distributions and, if neccesary, to run Windows programs inside of Puppy (though running Windows programs requires a copy of Windows).  Running a VM is not, as they say, trivial, but it is a great way to learn stuff.

    VirtualBox for Puppy

OpenOffice 3 Beta 2 - The free OpenOffice suite is well into its release cycle for version 3 and this second beta seems quite stable.  This program mounts as an sfs file instead of as a pet, since it is large and would take too long to install as a pet and consume too much memory.  The ability to mount sfs files is another strength of Puppy, as it offers a second way to install useful additional software.

    Macgic has been released

    Macgic has been released

(Macgic - Transform Dingo to Macpup Dingo)

This is a pet package that can convert a default Puppy Dingo to a Macpup Dingo. The best part is that this can be uninstalled and everything restored back to the way it was before. The following forum thread has details:

    Puppy 4.0 Manual Released

The manual for 4.0 has been released. It is currently available in german and english, other languages will follow as translated. Both these versions are maintained by oli who wrote the original. He would like to hand over the english version to someone else, it could be done by a group. We are not short of english speakers who know a bit about puppy, so volunteers can contact him direct or join the thread on the forum. Your knowedge does not need to cover everything, there are a couple of volunteers already. It could be a good opportunity to collaborative with some other puppy users.

Oli deserves a big round of thanks for the work he has done so far. If you want to give something back to the community don't be shy jump in and lend a hand.
