Get Your Puppy a Pet - Exciting New Software - PSip (Puppy SoftPhone) - Virtual Box - Open Office 3 Beta 2.
The easiest way to expand Puppy's capabilities is by adding Pet packages. They install with one click and are already tested. Many are available by clicking the Install icon to start the Puppy Package Manager, but others are being prepared almost daily and posted in the Additional Software (Pups, n' stuff) Discussion Forum. Here are three you might find interesting: PSip (Puppy SoftPhone) - Virtual Box - Open Office 3 Beta 2. Please click the links below the descriptions for further information.
PSip - Puppy SIP - a Softphone for Dingo 4 that is a collective project of the Puppy Community coordinated by Official Crustacean Lobster. This is a Beta release and everyone can help by testing it and reporting their results. Softphones are one of the topics that are getting a lot of attention in the Linux world, and Puppy is right there at the forefront.
VirtualBox - A free Virtual Machine for both Windows and Linux, Virtual Box is now owned by Sun Microsystems. It allows one to run both Windows and Linux programs in a virtual machine inside of Puppy, so it is a way both to check out other Linux distributions and, if neccesary, to run Windows programs inside of Puppy (though running Windows programs requires a copy of Windows). Running a VM is not, as they say, trivial, but it is a great way to learn stuff.
OpenOffice 3 Beta 2 - The free OpenOffice suite is well into its release cycle for version 3 and this second beta seems quite stable. This program mounts as an sfs file instead of as a pet, since it is large and would take too long to install as a pet and consume too much memory. The ability to mount sfs files is another strength of Puppy, as it offers a second way to install useful additional software.
